What's In A Name?

So you gave me your name.
What good has it ever done me?
You never stuck around long enough to care,
Or to see just who I'd be.
And you called me your son.
Was I the light of your eye?
Years of getting to know me and to watch me grow,
Disappeared with a sound of goodbye.
But I still got your name.
Not proud of it nor am I ashamed.
It's like looking at papers with words scribbled backwards.
It's there, but we are not the same.
I am just another man.
Without a link or a trait of his father.
We have ties that will bind us till the end of our days,
Our relationship we could never alter.
And I love you, because you are my Dad!
Even from a distance, I carried a flame.
For you to love me, enough to come home,
Because you cared enough to give me your name.

Who are we, without our sadness
One by one we fade with time
Hollow shells and lonely souls that wander
Addicted to the benign
How are we to achieve our happiness
One by one, let our wounds start to heal
Here's a gift to you, from the broken-hearted
A smile you can never steal

So you gave me your name.
Years went by and I thought it was love!
When things got too hard, you just stopped coming 'round,
Our life would never evolve.
Wasn't I the love of your life?
The man you could never live without?
When you said we'd be together, said that it would last till forever,
At what moment did I give you doubt?
Still, I took your name.
Let it warm me like sunshine!
Basked in its sweet afterglow, addicted to the pheromones,
I grew accustomed to its design.
I am just another fool,
Without a hope or a heart to hold on to.
We had ties that would have bound us, till the end of our days.
Our relationship, you somehow out grew.
And I loved you, because you were all that I ever wanted
When you left me, I still carried a flame
Hoping for you to love me, enough to come home,
Because you cared enough to give me your name.

Who are we, without our sadness
One by one we fade with time
Hollow shells and lonely souls that wander
Addicted to the benign
How are we to achieve our happiness
One by one, let our wounds start to heal
Here's a gift to you, from the broken-hearted
A smile you can never steal

[So you gave me your name.
From the borderline I searched for your hand.
I sought asylum from madness, in the comfort of your arms
A stranger to you and your land.
Was it too much to protect me,
From the demons I thought I'd outrun?
Did I somehow mistake you, blindly accepting your kindness?
Unaware of your loaded gun.
Still, you gave me a name.
And a freedom that I had longed for.
And a chance to start over, to give purpose and meaning.
To see what the U.S. had in store.
But I was not a welcome man.
And your propaganda machine would destroy me
The ties that bind, could never find common ground
I found myself exiled completely
I loved you, because you promised to be the land of the free
When you shunned me, I still carried a flame
Hoping for you to love me, and to let me come home,
Because you cared enough to give me your name.]

Who are we, without our sadness
One by one we fade with time
Hollow shells and lonely souls that wander
Addicted to the benign
How are we to achieve our happiness
One by one, let our wounds start to heal
Here's a gift to you, from the broken-hearted
A smile you can never steal
